What it shows
A golden wheat field stretches under a stormy dark blue sky, crossed by a flock of black crows. Three paths open into the field without leading anywhere visible.
Van Gogh painted it in July 1890 in Auvers-sur-Oise, a few weeks before his death, in an elongated double-square format. In a letter he spoke of painting wheat fields under troubled skies to express sadness and extreme loneliness, but also what he found healthy in the countryside.
