What it shows
A swirling night sky with eleven stars, a crescent moon and one very bright star (identified by astronomers as Venus) hangs over a sleeping village below the hills. In the foreground a dark cypress rises like a flame, linking earth and sky.
Van Gogh painted it in June 1889 at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, where he had admitted himself. The view starts from his bedroom window, but the village and church are partly invented: he painted during the day, from memory.
Did you know?
- In the year he spent at Saint-Rémy he painted around 150 canvases, including his irises and olive groves.
- The Museum of Modern Art in New York acquired it in 1941 through the bequest of Lillie P. Bliss, one of its founders.
- It is a mid-sized canvas, 73.7 × 92.1 cm; the thick, spiralling brushstrokes are best appreciated in large reproductions.
