What it shows
A couple embraces, wrapped in golden robes, on a meadow of flowers that ends at an abrupt edge. He bends his head to kiss her cheek; she closes her eyes, kneeling on the flowery ground.
Klimt contrasts two kinds of ornament: black and gold rectangles on the man’s robe, circles and flowers on the woman’s. The canvas is square, 180 × 180 cm, and is the high point of his “golden period”.
Did you know?
- The Austrian state bought it in 1908, before Klimt even considered it finished, when it was shown at the Vienna Kunstschau.
- The use of gold is linked to the Byzantine mosaics of Ravenna, which Klimt visited in 1903.
- The son of a gold engraver, Klimt applied real gold and silver leaf on top of the paint.
