What it shows
Organic shapes, spirals, circles and letters float on a mauve ground. In the centre, two large yellow forms marked with the Roman numerals I, II and III touch at a single point, like two seeds or two petals opening. It is an image of growth and union rather than of anything recognisable.
It belongs to The Ten Largest, a series of ten paintings on the stages of human life: childhood (Nos. 1 and 2), youth (3 and 4), adulthood (5 to 8) and old age (9 and 10). The series is in turn part of the Paintings for the Temple, the great cycle Hilma af Klint painted between 1906 and 1915 and which, she said, was commissioned by her spiritual guides.
Did you know?
- It measures 3.28 × 2.40 metres, like the other nine paintings in the series, all painted in tempera on paper in 1907 and later mounted on canvas.
- Hilma af Klint was painting abstract forms years before Kandinsky or Malevich, who were long credited with inventing abstraction.
- She asked that her abstract work not be shown until 20 years after her death. She became known internationally in 1986, and her exhibition at the Guggenheim in New York (2018–2019) was the most visited in the museum’s history.
