What it shows
Jesus, his mother and his disciples attend a wedding at Cana, where he turns water into wine, his first miracle according to the Gospel of John. Veronese sets it as a 16th-century Venetian banquet with more than a hundred figures, classical architecture and sumptuous clothing.
In the centre a group of musicians plays for the guests; according to tradition, Veronese portrayed himself among them with Titian, Tintoretto and Jacopo Bassano.
