What it shows
The Virgin Mary, seated on the lap of her mother, Saint Anne, leans forward to hold the Christ Child, who plays with a lamb, a symbol of his future sacrifice. The three figures form a gentle pyramid against a landscape of bluish mountains.
Leonardo worked on it for years, roughly between 1503 and 1519, and left it unfinished. The transitions of light and the haze of the background are among the most delicate in his work.
