What it shows
A man in a straw hat brings a rowing boat alongside a jetty where a young woman in white is waiting. Behind them, the silver-grey water of the Stockholm archipelago stretches to low islands on the horizon.
The water is the extraordinary part: Zorn builds it from transparent layers of watercolour, letting reflections, the light of the sky and the green depths show beneath the surface. He painted it at Dalarö, a coastal village in the archipelago, in the summer of 1886.
