What it shows
Two fashionably dressed men talk in a wood next to a naked woman who looks out at the viewer; in the background another woman bathes in a stream. In front lie an overturned basket of fruit and bread and her discarded clothes.
Manet reworked classical models, an engraving by Marcantonio Raimondi after Raphael and the Pastoral Concert in the Louvre, but with real people of his own time. That, and the direct gaze of the model, Victorine Meurent, caused the scandal.
