What it shows
Parisians of different classes spend a Sunday on the island of La Grande Jatte in the Seine: strollers, a woman with a monkey on a leash, a girl in white, boatmen and rowers. The figures look still and geometric, almost like statues.
Seurat painted it between 1884 and 1886 with small dots of pure colour that the eye blends at a distance, the technique known as pointillism or divisionism. It was shown at the eighth and last Impressionist exhibition in 1886.
