Print, poster or canvas: differences, prices and which to choose

“Print” and “poster” are often used interchangeably: an image printed on paper that is usually framed. A canvas, by contrast, is fabric stretched over a wooden frame and hung as it is. Each has its advantages.

When to choose a print

If you want to spend little, have several pieces or change them from time to time, a print is the most flexible option. It is also best if you already own frames or want a particular one (wood, metal, with a mount). Behind anti-glare glass, a matte print looks very clean.

When to choose a canvas

A canvas has presence of its own without a frame, suits warm-styled living rooms and bedrooms, and copes better with knocks than glass, which makes it a good choice for children’s rooms or narrow hallways. It costs more and, in our case, takes longer to arrive because it is made outside the EU (with EU VAT already included, so no customs).

What about image quality?

Both start from a high-resolution image of the original. Works with fine detail, such as The Garden of Earthly Delights or Netherlandish Proverbs, look especially good as a large print behind glass; thickly painted works, such as The Starry Night, look great on canvas.

Frequently asked questions

Is an art print the same as a poster?
In practice yes: both are printed on paper. “Art print” usually suggests higher-quality paper intended for framing.
Does a canvas need a frame?
No. It arrives stretched on a pine frame with hanging hardware included.
Which lasts longer, a print or a canvas?
Both last many years indoors if kept out of direct sunlight and damp. A framed print behind glass is better protected from dust.
