What it shows
A couple embraces tenderly: he rests his hand on her breast and she covers it with hers. Both wear rich clothes of red and gold. Nobody knows who they are; one theory is that they represent Isaac and Rebecca from the Old Testament.
Rembrandt laid the paint on very thickly on the man’s golden sleeve, sometimes with a palette knife, building up relief. The title The Jewish Bride was given by a collector in the 19th century and has no documentary basis.
