What it shows

An odalisque, a woman of an imagined harem, lies naked with her back to us on a divan and turns her face towards the viewer. She is surrounded by fabrics, feathers, a fan and an opium pipe, typical of the Orientalism of the period.

Ingres deliberately lengthened the back, arms and pelvis for a more elegant line. Critics at the Salon of 1819 mocked her for having “three vertebrae too many”.

Did you know?

  • It was commissioned in 1814 by Caroline Murat, Queen of Naples and Napoleon’s sister, who never received it because the empire fell.
  • A 2004 medical study calculated that the back has two to three more vertebrae than normal.
  • In 1989 the Guerrilla Girls used it in their famous poster about the lack of women artists in museums.

Where to see the original
